The Staples Wreckers football team captured another win on Friday, Nov. 9, beating the Stamford Black Knights with a score of 37-0.

All eyes were on quarterback Jack Saltus ’19, as starting quarterback Jake Thaw ’20 got the night off with rest. Saltus finished the first half with four passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown to take a 37-0 lead into halftime, which is all the Wreckers needed to secure the win.

“Saltus waited all season for this moment and he came to play,” Mark Iskandar ’19 said. “Going out on your senior night and getting five touchdowns in one half must have been a great feeling for him. We’re all very proud of him.”

Staples took the lead early, after a fumble recovery on the first defensive drive for the Wreckers, Saltus threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Adam Petro ’20 on the next possession, giving the Wreckers a 7-0 lead to start the game.

Stamford had a difficult time on offense on what was a cold, rainy night. They finished the first half with a fumble, a safety and an interception as they could not find any way to get down the field.

“We are really happy about the shutout last night and getting all the seniors in,” Captain Blake Runkle ’19 said. “It was an amazing senior night and a good last home game for the seniors.”

The second half started with a running clock, since the Wreckers already had a commanding lead. The Wreckers came out with a run-first offense, while the Black Knights still couldn’t make any plays on the offensive end. Neither team put points on the board in the second half.

“It was a bittersweet night,” Captain Matt Almansi ’19 said. “We played very well, but it was the last time playing under the Friday night lights. I’m happy we were able to go out on a high note and I’m so thankful for all the memories and lessons I learned playing on the S. Roll Wreckers.”

Staples (7-2) will take on Greenwich (8-0) on Thursday, Nov. 22 at 10 a.m. at Greenwich.
