The boys’ soccer team picked up their first loss of the season on Friday, Sept. 21, losing to Trumbull 1-0.

Trumbull wasted no time as Andrew Restrepo scored around 13 minutes into the match off an assist from Carrigan Cullinan, giving Trumbull a 1-0 lead.

“We knew they were going to come out and attack early,” Ry Cohen ’19 said. “I made sure I didn’t lose focus and kept sticking to the game plan.”

The Wreckers attempted to respond, playing aggressive as they looked to score their first goal of the day. However, Trumbull goalkeeper Chris Prizio and the Golden Eagles defense stayed strong.

When the second half came around, the Wreckers came out with strong defensive pressure, which gave way to a more offensive-minded game plan as the second half went on.

Prizio would not give in, saving a strong shot from Lefty Penderakis ’19 and a free kick from Matthew Tanzer ’19.

“They have a tough defense,” Penderakis said. “We definitely learned what we have to improve on from this game, but I was really proud of the way we played in the second half and how we refused to give up.”

The Wreckers were given a golden opportunity to tie the game with less than five minutes left when Trumbull fouled in the box. Vaughan Sealey ’19 stepped up for the Wreckers first penalty kick of the year, but Prizio saved it once again and kept Trumbull undefeated.

Because of the loss, the Wreckers are now 3-1-1, placing them fourth in the standings.

“This is all motivation,” Nick DiMasi ’19 said. “We know what we are capable of and will be ready next time out.”

The Wreckers will look to bounce back in their next game against Bridgeport Central, which is set for Monday, Sept. 24 at home.
