Although some players must take ACTs the day after homecoming , they will remain focused on the game and prepare for the tests with a good night’s sleep.

Multiple Staples senior football players prepare to tackle the ACT at 8 a.m. this Saturday morning after Staples’ first Friday night homecoming game under the lights.

Nick Ward, ’14, is among the students who signed up for the test, not realizing it was the morning after the big game. “I think it’s just a pain to wake up the next morning, [but] it won’t stop me from having a great homecoming game,” said Ward.

Varsity Football Coach Marce Petroccio doesn’t expect his players to be affected on the field. “The kids are going to be focused on the game. Then the game will end and they’ll focus on the test,” said Petroccio.

Giving his players some early advice, Petroccio said, “I’ll say the same thing I say after every game. Go home, shower, get something to eat and get to bed early.”

Another test taker and football star, Patrick Lesch, ’14, agrees with his coach. “My plans after the game really haven’t changed at all to be honest. We are in season and take it very seriously, so it is like any other Friday night in the season to me,” said Lesch.

Peter Blevins, ‘14, compared his ideal night before the test to reality. “I think I’ll end up going to bed later than I wanted to, but I’ve been preparing for this test for so long now that I don’t think it’s going to have a major impact,” said Blevins.

Staples guidance counselor Bill Plunkett provided his advice to students. “Homecoming is an important high school tradition and should be enjoyed … but that doesn’t mean you can’t go home and get a good night’s sleep afterward in preparation for the test the next morning.”

Confident that Staples will have a great homecoming game despite the fact that players are testing the next day, Lesch encourages fans to come to the game. “It’s the first Friday night homecoming in history so we’ve got to get a big crowd and make the most of it for our first home win of the season,” said Lesch.

Taylor Harrington
Taylor Harrington, Breaking News Managing Editor
Taylor Harrington ’15 has been through the ropes before. As Breaking News Managing Editor, Harrington enters her second year on Inklings with a prestigious position and nothing but a positive attitude.   There’s no one word that describes Harrington, but outgoing, creative, and amiable are the closest fits. If asked to put her persona in a nutshell, her love for people would be the common denominator.   “Whether it’s helping the underprivileged, supervising four-year old kids, or hanging out with my friends, my life revolves around people,” Harrington said.   One of Harrington’s favorite parts about Inklings is the social media aspect. Known for her big-hit video, 2013 Inklings year in review, Harrington’s pure creativity is shown in all her work.   Aside from Inklings, she spends the majority of her time after school as the secretary of the Best Buddies club and volunteers for the National Charity League (NCL). Over the summer, Harrington hung out with her Best Buddy on a consistent basis. Her involvement ranged from planned events to baseball games with him.   Harrington’s passion for helping will continue this year as a part of the NCL, a mother-daughter organization that assists with charitable events in the community. Specifically, she and the senior class will be doing a project to decorate the room of a little girl who was recently diagnosed with cancer.   “She wants a pink and purple princess room, so that's what we are going to give her,” Harrington said.   But Harrington’s claim to fame is her superb baking skills. The non-existent bakery, as she likes to call it, is her assortment of exotic desserts on Instagram. After baking one of her mouth-watering masterpieces, Harrington will post a picture of it on Instagram and label it “my non-existent bakery.”

Eliza Llewellyn, Web Managing Editor
Eliza Llewellyn ’14 is driven and well-rounded. Now that it’s her third year on Inklings, she’s ready to take the lead. As web managing editor, Eliza is excited to advance the Inklings website with innovations in media and graphics. It’s not going to be easy, and fortunately her experience as co-captain of the Staples JV tennis team has taught her the valuable leadership skills necessary for the job. Not only this, but her position on the yearbook committee and her commitment to playing piano constantly puts her time management skills to the test. While her job on Inklings may also be extremely time-consuming, she puts it above all else. “If I’m doing homework at 10:30 p.m. and a new e-mail pops up with an article, I stop what I’m doing to read it,” said Eliza. “It’s one of my first priorities.” When Eliza isn’t editing articles, she’s writing them. Last year she wrote a news story, "Legacies: Investigating a College Application Controversy," which she considers one of her best works. “It felt good to talk to guidance counselors and college admissions officers because I was finding information that people would not get otherwise,” said Eliza. This year she hopes to pursue writing in-depth and research-based articles, as well as find a good balance among all her extracurriculars. With her dedication and drive, there’s no doubt Eliza will go above and beyond.
