Those who follow the JV football team here at Staples were probably expecting to see a victory in the box score Sunday morning. After all, the team hadn’t lost since 2009. However, their luck ran out against St. Joe’s on Saturday afternoon, as they fell to the Cadets 20-15 in a nail-biter.
There was plenty of drama at the end, as Staples scored a touchdown and then converted a two point conversion with 49 seconds remaining to take the lead 15-14, before surrendering a touchdown to the Cadets and falling by a final count 20-15. Durim Trdevaj ’14 and Teddy Coogan ’15 added touchdowns for the Wreckers in the defeat.
However, according to wide receiver Jack Greenwald ’14, the Wreckers are all for turning the page and creating a streak of their own. “The attitude hasn’t changed. We know we still have a great team. It’s all about starting the streak back up again.”
Greenwald also gave the Cadets a lot of credit for doing what they had to do at the end to get the win.
“You gotta give St. Joe’s a lot of credit. They hung in there even after we threw that punch with the T.D. at the end so they just made a couple more plays in the end.”
However, despite the loss Greenwald expressed optimism about the team’s play going forward.
“We mainly just need improvement on defense, and we usually have a walkthrough before a game but it was our first Saturday game so we didn’t,” Greenwald said. “It was our first time together and we meshed pretty well for our first time.”
