Bauer Leads Wreckers Baseball to Third Straight Victory over Norwich Free Academy 5-1

After picking up a big win against St. Joe’s on Friday, the Wreckers continued their hot streak as Alex Bauer ’11 gave up just one run in four innings and Brendan Bernstein and Ben Lipper each homered to help Staples cruise to a 5-1 win over NFA on Senior Day.

Despite having only pitched 3 2/3 innings before Saturday, Bauer baffled the Wildcat hitters as he gave up just three hits and struck out four. The win marks the second for the senior who made the Wreckers squad for the first time this season.

The starter had plenty of help from the Staples lineup as Brendan Bernstein ’11 hit his first home run of the season and center fielder Ben Lipper connected on his second homer of the year.

The Wreckers were able to get timely base knocks in this game as Bryan Terzian ’11 drove in a run following a Tyler Jacobs ’11 triple in the second inning and Colin McCarthy had a running scoring single in the fifth inning.

While Staples and NFA play in different conferences, the 13th victory of the season for the Wreckers was an important one for state playoff implications. Prior to play on Saturday these two teams were separated by just four spots in the standings, however with the loss Norwich Free Academy fell to 14th while Staples moved up to 6th.

In a jam-packed week of baseball, the Wreckers went 3-1 and will not play another game until Wednesday when the team goes on the road to face Fairfield Ludlowe. The Falcons are the reigning FCIAC champs,  but are right now on the outside looking in at the FCIAC playoffs. With a win over either Ludlowe or Greenwich, the Wreckers can secure a home FCIAC playoff game as they currently sit a half game ahead of the Danbury Hatters in 3rd place.
