Boys Tennis Defeats a Shorthanded Greenwich Team

On April 29, the Staples Wreckers Boys’ Tennis team defeated the Greenwich Cardinals by a final score of 6–1, improving their record to 9–0, while the Cardinals suffered their first loss of the season, moving to 8–1.

However, this Cardinal squad looked a little different then usual–the team played without three starting players, including their number one singles player, Tyler Kratky. This put extra pressure on the Greenwich team, including Andrew Blumberg, who filled the void at number one singles.

“This is a great win for the team,” said Co-Captain Daniel Hirschberg ’11, who defeated Blumberg handedly, 6–0, 6–1. “Its great for our confidence to beat Greenwich–even if they are missing a bunch of players–a win against Greenwich is always nice.”

Coach Kris Hrisovulos agreed. “This convincing win helps us believe that we can compete with these guys, even though they were missing some key players–a win like today can’t hurt us.”

But even with that said, Hrisovulos still believes the team can improve.

“I told the guys we have to work on team unity–especially in doubles,” said Hrisovulos about his young team (half of the players are either freshman or new upperclassmen). “If we can improve our doubles play, it will really help us come playoff time.”

The team’s next match is at home against Norwalk on monday.
