On Tuesday October 6th, the Staples Boys soccer team had one of its biggest games of the season thus far.
It was a battle between two of the sharpest teams in the FCIAC as the Norwalk Bears (3-1-2) played host to the undefeated Staples Wreckers (7-0).
The match was a defensive stand as the first half ended in a 0-0 tie. Wrecker defenders Mikey Fitzgerald ’10, Frankie Bergonzi ’11, Sean Gallagher ’11, and quad-captain Jack Hennessy ’10 were key in aiding Staples’ senior goalie Mike McCarthy ’10 who had eight total saves.
The Wreckers struck first with a goal from Fitzgerald ’10 three minutes into the second half.
The Bears responded quickly with a goal from junior Andres Torres ’11 a minute later. Torres was the notorious sophomore last year who gave Staples some serious trouble.
With seven minutes left in the game quad-captain Alan Reiter ’10 sent home a penalty kick for the game winning goal.
The undefeated Wreckers’ next game is this coming Saturday (October, 10) at Brookfield.
