Staples’ football will enter the 2008 season with new uniforms following a donation by Westport resident and Arena Football League VP of Consumer Products Mike Loparo.

Loparo, a former NFL licensing executive, contributed about $15,000 worth of Russell Athletics jerseys, pants, and socks; Russell is the official provider of on-field apparel for the AFL.

The donation could not have come at a better time. The program looks to renew its jerseys every three to four years, and it was due for a change.

The donation covered the team’s home uniforms, so Athletic Director Marty Lisevick only needed to purchase the aways. Bruce Burke of “One World USA” designed the New Balance uniforms along with a new Staples “S” and shield. The block “S” had represented Staples football for years, and the team was looking for a change.

“We wanted to have our own identity,” said Coach Marce Petroccio, “[the uniforms are] beautiful. Gorgeous.”
