Though the trees sway and stray leaves swirl, the weather right now is eerily calm. Before the worst comes and the power inevitably cuts, there can’t be anything better than watching a few quality storm flicks, curled up on the couch under a blanket while a true hurricane brews outside.

  1. Clue

It’s pretty unlikely that most Staples students have seen this 1985 classic, at least not outside of Mr. Rollison’s Chemistry class. But it’s almost guaranteed that we’ve all played the board game at least once—you know, the one with Miss Scarlett in the ballroom with the revolver? In this film, a thunderstorm traps the iconic characters inside the mansion, leaving them stuck there for quite some time. After Sandy strikes, you may be able to relate with these vigilantes.

  1. The Wizard of Oz

There’s hardly a movie that’s more iconic—between the Emerald City, the Wicked Witch of the West, and the Lollipop Guild, “The Wizard of Oz” is hard to forget. Perhaps the most iconic element of all is the infamous storm that sweeps Dorothy right out of Kansas. Seeing an entire house taken up into the vortex of a tornado will make Sandy feel like a light breeze. And either way, any amount of time is too long since you last watched it. A couple of days inside gives us a perfect excuse.

  1. The Lion King

Let’s be honest: that scene toward the end when Simba rises up against the odds and battles Scar on Pride Rock during that ultra-dramatic thunderstorm? Gets us every time. And either way, if you grew up in the 1990s, this movie is simply embedded in your history. Hakuna matata? Disney nostalgia is never unwelcome.

  1. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

Watching the citizens of Chewandswallow survive elephantine pancakes and bananas crashing down from the sky will make this Frankenstorm seem like a cinch. Watching a movie like this might make you hungry, sure, but the reassurance that everything is going to end up okay is worth a little stomach pain. This one is also appealing for the whole family—except maybe your dad. He’ll go take a nap for this one.

  1. 21 Jump Street

Alright, this movie has nothing to do with a storm or a hurricane, but it’s one of this year’s biggest—and funniest—flicks. If you haven’t already seen it, get ready to laugh to the point of tears. Literally. If you already have, you should know that this is one of those rare movies whose repeats are even funnier than the first time.
