What is senioritis?

Senior(noun) is defined as holding a high position, in this case it’s a fourth year student on the verge of graduating high school. The Suffix -itis is classified as an inflammatory disease, or something that spreads in mindset. Senioritis can also be classified as an STD, which stands for a Senior Transmitted Disease. Senioritis is a contagious disease that can easily spread within students in high school generally between ages 17 to 19. This disease is most prevalent in students post first semester. There is not much known about the disease, and teachers are still working on a cure through multiple studies and experiments. Regardless, there haven’t been any breakthroughs in the academic field.

Senioritis is mostly attracted to students who wear sunglasses indoors, backwards caps, and boat shoes with socks. It can also come forward in people who have high GPAs and don’t need to worry about getting rescinded from college.

Why do people get senioritis?

Senioritis is a true anomaly, but for most students, it’s inevitable and creeps up on them. The effects of senioritis can be derived from sleep deprivation, taking too many AP courses, getting into college, and, most importantly, having a car. Going through four years of high school is tough on many students and they feel that after completing the ACT and SAT, and getting accepted into college, it is now a time for rejoicing and celebration. However it allows students to excuse themselves from their school obligations. This can be dangerous because the disease can have a snowball effect. The more students skip school they have the chance of getting lower grades due to tardieness.

How do I know if I have senioritis?

Senioritis generally isn’t noticeable until it gets into its late stages. The best way to know if a student is getting senioritis is by checking Home Access Center and seeing if there is a steady decline in his or her grades. If there is, seek guidance immediately. If a student finds his or herself in the late stages of senioritis, more physical altercations will become prevalent. Students who wear college shirts and sweatshirts over the iconic blue and white “S” of Staples, gain weight are all symptoms of the late stages of senioritis, and sometimes in rare critical cases, students will get rescinded from college.

How do I prevent getting senioritis?

There are only a few ways to prevent  this disease but they are 100 percent guaranteed to work if done consistently and properly. The first way to make sure you don’t get senioritis is to get to school and get to classes on time. It shows that the students put the effort into their courses and the timeliness will motivate them. Next, don’t ditch classes. If one is skipped, the mentality of “another missed class wont hurt me” will kick in and, and next thing you know, school credit will be lost. Finally, treat last semester as first semester, this will ensure the thoroughness of work and nothing will be half complete or lazy.

Remember, If you feel that you might be on the verge of getting senioritis, or are worried that you might have it, please reach out to your local guidance counselor for help. Remember that failing classes is no joke.
