In the summer of 1995, an ambitious Shawn Nelson stuffed foam camping mattress pads into a seven-foot sack and brought it to his girlfriend’s mom for sewing. This large, DIY sack became the first-ever product in the Lovesac collection. Westport now has the most recent showroom of the business’s 85 locations as of Nov. 15.
Lovesac aims to design life-long products like their ‘Sactional,’ a rearrangeable, changeable, movable, washable and replaceable couch. Another popular product, the ‘Sac,’ resembles a bean bag but is instead filled with proprietary Durafoam™ for cloud-like comfort. According to Lovesac employee, Daniel Daly, they strive to make their products modular.
“Whether you have a growing family or shrinking family,” Daly said, “we make products that can accommodate any space and any situation.”
The Westport showroom exemplifies this mission by demonstrating that one can create furniture in any size or design that fits their needs. They don’t stock any furniture in this store; everything needs to be ordered either at the store or online. This lack of inventory has allowed the brand to squeeze into the small space at 68 Post Road East. This new addition to the Westport community has created excitement in Staples students.
“I feel like it’s a good thing to have in Westport as you don’t see very many furniture stores often and the nice, cozy, warm environment […] makes me feel like I would belong as a customer,” Samir Mott ’22 said.
At the front of the showroom, a table scattered with small wooden blocks allows customers to design the perfect sactional for their space. The showroom includes products like the ‘BigOne’ sac, the ‘Pillowsac,’ and a seven-seat sactional. This variety of modern furniture leads Daly to believe the showroom offers a new perspective to the Westport community.
“Lovesac brings a lot of personality to the design district,” Daly said. “Since we’re right next to Restoration Hardware it gives people a different option […] it gives them something that is non-traditional and bucking the trend in terms of what they have available around here.”
Westport seems like an ideal choice for Lovesac as their headquarters are located in Stamford, Connecticut and the company has been advertising to the area for some time.
“Westport was a natural choice for us,” Daly said. “Not only do we do all of our photos here for our marketing but the people here are awesome.”
