When Gilli Rozynek ’16 pinned a creamy white corsage on Kenji Goto ’16’s sports jacket and searched in her purse for her slightly-crumpled junior prom ticket, she probably didn’t realize it would not be the only time the two attended a school function as a duo. However, this time the pair will be trading flowery boutonnieres for feathery boas and pastel formalwear for Staples logowear.

Goto and Rozynek were voted by the senior class to be this year’s Pep Rally emcees, and few seemed shocked by this news. “I wasn’t surprised at all when Ms. Atticks pulled me out of class [to tell me I was an emcee] and Gilli was waiting outside the door,” Goto said. “I mean, who wouldn’t vote her for emcee?”

Ian Tapsall, Rozynek’s field hockey coach, agreed. “She has a keen sense of humor and a bright infectious smile– qualities that make her a good MC,” he said.

Gilli matched their enthusiasm. “I know Kenji will kill it,” she said, adding with a grin that everyone should know “he picks nice corsages.”

The pair has faced minor setbacks including their differing senses of humor and the inclement weather that pushed the Pep Rally date back two weeks, but they haven’t let this dash their spirits.

“Kenji and I are going to bring fire to the pep rally,” Rozynek said. “We’ve been friends for a while so it should be a lot of fun to be up there leading it.”

Goto playfully disagreed, adding, “My sense of humor is a little out there, and I’m probably going to be the only one laughing at my jokes a lot of the time.”

Regardless of this doubt, both are confident that their friendship and energy will make them unique and entertaining emcees. Both also mentioned that students should get their seats on the bleachers early to avoid missing the show’s highlight.

“What am I most excited for?” Rozynek asked. “That’s simple. The opening line.”
