Let the luck be with you

Let+the+luck+be+with+you

Seeing that it’s St. Patrick’s Day today, everyone is getting into the “luck of the Irish” spirit.

Just put on some green clothing, start searching for four leaf clovers and stock up on gold coins. This will undoubtedly get everyone feeling spirited and enthusiastic about their St. Patrick’s Day celebration.

“I love St. Patrick’s day. It always puts me in a good mood and it’s a great way to spend time with family friends,” Caroline Lane ’16 said.

One of the greatest things about St. Patrick’s Day is that you have an excuse to spend time with those distant relatives that you only see every few months.

Though seeing family and friends is great, it doesn’t compare to the food. One of the best parts of St. Patrick’s Day is the traditional Irish dinner. From corn beef and cabbage to Irish soda bread, you can never go wrong with the traditional Irish food.

“My absolute favorite thing about St. Patrick’s Day is eating Irish food. It’s the one day a year my family makes dishes like corn beef and cabbage or roasted potatoes and I don’t know what I’d do without it,” Logan Murphy ’15 said.

Along with the food being a tradition, a lot of people here at Staples have their own St. Patrick’s Day traditions.

“Every year we go into the city to watch the parade then we go to an Irish pub that we’ve been eating at for years,” says Carly Lenihan ’16.

Along with fun family outings, we also have some pretty crazy traditions here at Staples. “I used to look for four three clovers and eat them hoping it would give me luck,” said Lenihan.

If you’re thinking that eating four leaf clovers is as crazy as it gets, think again.

“When I was little whole family would make leprechaun traps with chocolate to see if we could actually catch a leprechaun,” said Julia Bartimer ’16.

From crazy yet fun traditions to delicious food, St. Patrick’s Day is full of fun. Whether you’re spending time with family or hanging out with friends, St. Patrick’s Day is one of the most festive and fun holidays.

“St. Patrick’s Day is my favorite holiday. The amount of fun activities you can do is endless and no matter what you do it’s always fun,” Lane said.

In her premier season on the Staples cross country team Munley was almost hit by a car off the Post Road, an experience which frightened her but did not weaken her resolve or commitment. The close-call occurred mere weeks after Staples track star Caroline Koenig ’14 was struck by a car while on a team run. Koenig helped quell Munley’s nerves and encouraged her to put the incident behind her while taking further precautions, such as constantly maintaining awareness of your surroundings, to stay safe in the future. Munley took the advice to heart, and in the spring went on to break a school record as the first runner in the Distance Medley Relay, a three lap relay which the team ran in approximately 3 minutes and 50 seconds. “It was really rewarding because I was working so hard for it,” said Munley. “It was an honor to be a part of something so big for Staples as just a freshman.” In her first year on the Inklings staff, Munley, who enjoys writing short stories for class, she said, is looking forward to a greater audience for her work and is eager to see her name in print for the first time.
