Despite what many students believe, there is a world beyond chicken fry Fridays and sophomore swimming: college. But does Staples get students ready for that immense jump from high school to college?

Five Staples alumni all tend to agree that Staples has prepared them for most trials and tribulations college throws at them.

“I constantly heard freshman in college last year saying that Staples really prepares you for college and to be honest I was a little hesitant but the fact of the matter is that it really does,” said Will Hardy ’10 who now attends Connecticut College in New London, Connecticut. The students agreed that while there may be less work, all work that is given is interesting and challenging.

Haley Schulman ’10 who is a student at the University of Colorado, Boulder was the type of student throughout high school who never enjoyed doing schoolwork and found it rather a hassle.

“The lectures are so interesting, so I don’t mind the learning,” Schulman said. “I also study more because it’s a lot easier to study with all the freedom I have.”

Although many students picture college as four years to live away from parental control, small daily rituals such as doing laundry or cooking food become trivial when having to be done alone.

“I had to have my mom on the phone the first time I did my laundry. Also, you don’t realize how much time it takes to keep your life at a normal sanitary level. Cleaning and vacuuming and laundry take forever,” said Lucy Goss ’10 who is attending Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

Schulman also struggles with taking care of herself without having her parents there for quick advice.

“One day I was very sick and was just frustrated that I didn’t really know what to do. I could have used my parents in that situation,” said Schulman.

The first few months of school have not been all struggles and frustrations though.  The college lifestyle has brought meeting new people, going to parties, joining fraternities and sororities and experiencing new things each and everyday.

“The best thing I have experienced so far is being able to look at the ocean from our library. There is nothing like that in Westport,” said Sarah Lazar ’10 who attends Santa Barbara City College in Santa Barbara, California.

Although they’ve had their struggles, all these kids are definitely enjoying life after high school.
