As Staples Players 50th Anniversary performance approaches, “Inklings” interviewed Westport resident Craig Matheson, founder of Players, to discuss the drama program’s 50 years of theater.

Matheson talks about dedicated alumni and students, 28-year Players director Albert Pia, and Players history as a whole. He outlines the struggles and the community support when Players began, the reasoning behind choosing Al Pia as the second director of Players, and more.

The 50th anniversary show will be on May 22 at 7:30 p.m. and May 24 at 5:30 p.m. David Roth, current Players director, said the performance will attempt to talk about all 50 years of the drama program and will be composed of complicated songs and dances.

During the May 24 show, there will be a tribute to Matheson, and Rhonda Paul, production manager for Players, said over 300 alumni will attend. Other alumni will participate in or direct parts of the performance.
