Jughead, Betty, Veronica and Archie — the core four — are back and better than ever. The first episode of Riverdale Season 2, “A Kiss Before Dying,” premiered on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 8 pm and left fans in shock.
Season 1 of Riverdale ended with a dramatic cliff hanger in all four major plotlines. With Jughead’s father in jail, he was under pressure to make an alliance with the Serpents, the local biker gang, potentially putting his relationship with Betty on the line. Archie and Veronica have taken their relationship to a new level but the return of her father could cause problems. The Blossom household burned to ashes after Cheryl learned the dark secrets behind her family business and torched the mansion. But the biggest cliffhanger and awaited discovery was who shot Archie’s father, Fred Andrews, and whether he would survive.
After a summer of waiting to learn the fate of our favorite characters, many Staples students tuned in to The CW on Wednesday night. And they were not disappointed. “I was totally glued to the TV, so many questions were answered, but more new questions were raised” Avery Smith ’19 said — and many agreed with her.
Difficult parent relationship’s figure heavily this season. Luke Roehm, ’20 commented “Jughead’s dad’s gang might be involved in Fred’s shooting, or it might be Veronica’s sketchy dad who did it.” Complicated family relationships continue in the Blossom household — after Chery discovered that her family business was not as sweet as maple syrup but a drug cartel instead, “Cheryl went full psycho on her mom,” Roehm said.
The major plot line of the season was the shooting of Fred and whether he would survive. “I thought it was interesting that they spent the whole episode on the shooting of Archie’s dad,” Marlo Von Der Ahe ’20 said. And the major plot twist that shocked many viewers was an old friend who returns in the end — briefly. Archie’s old teacher and lover, Ms. Grundy, was introduced at the end of the episode, teaching piano in a nearby town to students (and continuing her love for young high school boys). In a surprise twist, Fred’s unknown shooter breaks in and strangles Ms. Grundy. “I want to know who is under the mask,” Von Der Ahe stated.
All in all it was a amazing start to the new season, one that Entertainment Weekly rightly suggested seemed to have “a darker vibe.” A few questions were answered, but more mysteries were raised. Our favorite characters returned and we are excited to see them unravel the mysteries before them.
