As this Rosh Hashanah is quickly approaching, the stress of what food to serve is sure to accompany it. Whether your family plans to have only close relatives or invite the entire community to your home, these recipes are sure to be crowd pleasers!

Good Ol’ Fashioned Tzimmes:

One of the most traditional foods to serve for this holiday, tzimmes can be found in different variations across the world. While there are surely more complicated versions, this recipe is about as easy as it gets, while tasting just as delicious as the rest.

Ingredients:

  • 1 large onion, cut in half
  • ¼ cup of oil
  • 1 point of carrots, sliced into ½ inch rounds
  • ½ pound of sweet potato
  • 10 diced prunes
  • 1 ½ cups of orange juice
  • ½ honey
  • ½ teaspoon of cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon of salt
  1. Add the oil to a pan and saute the onion for about 20 minutes.
  2. Add the rest of the ingredients to the oil and onion.
  3. Simmer on medium heat for two hours or until vegetables are soft.
  4. Serve warm and enjoy!

 Easy-peasy Apricot Chicken Breasts:

While traditional Jewish foods may not call for French dressing and onion soup mix, this recipe is so easy, anyone could do it in their sleep. It’s great for both adults and kids to get involved in, allowing it to be a true family effort. The best part? Your guests would never guess how simple it was based on the taste.

Ingredients:

  • 12 chicken breasts
  • 1 cup of apricot preserves
  • 1 cup of French dressing
  • 1 (1 ounce) package of dry onion soup mix
  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. In a medium size bowl, combine the jam, the dressing, and the soup mix. Mix together.
  3. Place the chicken pieces in a baking dish.
  4. Pour the apricot mixture over the chicken.
  5. Bake uncovered in the oven for 50 to 60 minutes.
  6. Remove from oven, serve warm, and enjoy!

 Grandma’s Noodle Pudding:

Perhaps one of the most classic dishes, noodle pudding has been enjoyed by generations. Once you start serving this recipe, it will be on the table for years to come. (And not to worry–the alcohol in the brandy cooks off in the heat, leaving only the effects of great taste.)

Ingredients:

  • 1 large box of broad noodles
  • 6 eggs
  • ½ pound of dried apricots
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ¼ pound of salted butter
  • 1 ½ cans of whole berry cranberries
  • ½ cup of apricot brandy
  • Salt to flavor
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Cut the apricots into quarters and place them in a measuring cup. Set aside.
  3. Open the cranberries and set aside.
  4. Beat 6 eggs in a large mixing bowl. At this point, you can add the salt (around a pinch or two).
  5. Add in the sugar and stir.
  6. Add in the apricots and cranberries.
  7. Melt ¼ pound of butter slowly and set aside.
  8. Fill a large pot with water, add a pinch of salt, and bring to a boil.
  9. Add the broad noodles. Cook for approximately 6 minutes.
  10. When 6 minutes have passed, drain in a colander.
  11. Pour 2 pats of melted butter over the noodles and place in a large bowl with the other ingredients. Mix.
  12. Pour into lightly buttered bowl and bake in oven for one hour, until brown.
  13. Remove dish from oven, serve warm, and enjoy!
