Every so often, a movie comes along that actually lives up to its publicity. The movie I am referring to is “Paranormal Activity”, and it is being hailed as the scariest movie of all time.

While this is far from true, “Paranormal Activity” rivals modern horror classics such as “Blair Witch Project” and “28 Days Later”. The internet hype was created a few years ago due to a private showing in California. The word got out, and by 2009, it was released around the country.

For a person who doesn’t waste his time with most of modern horror including “Saw” and “The Grudge”, I was less than enthusiastic to see this movie. As I was finding a seat in the packed ten o’clock showing, you could hear things like; “I am going to cry” and “I can’t believe you took me here” from fellow moviegoers.

The basic plot of the film involves a young couple who suspects that their house to be haunted by demons. The boyfriend, Micah Sloat, sets up a video surveillance system so they could watch what happens at night as they sleep. The film is 99 minutes of what Micah caught on camera.

Both actors display a great deal of talent by making audiences feel as if they aren’t watching a movie. Hats off to Sloat who especially brings a great deal of comedy and sarcasm to the film, in turn making it seem even more real life.

This film’s budget was only around $10,000 dollars, a large reason why this film generates such scares. High-budget horror movies always seem to be too fake to imagine, causing a bored audience. This low budget is the reason why throughout the movie you hear outbursts such as “this has got to be real” or “did this actually happen?”

Overall, while this definitely isn’t the scariest of all time, it proves to be well worth the online buildup. “Paranormal Activity” is a film of legitimacy, and it deserves to be seen by everybody.

You missed the most important part of this story. Micah Sloat — star of “Paranormal Activity” — is a Staples graduate! I'm surprised there's not more buzz about this! — Dan Woog
